GREAT: For the first 14 months of Christian’s life we used a cute, fluffy stuffed animal sound machine that would turn off after 45 minutes and this worked great …… that is until brother came along. Once brother got a little older his sleep patterns started changing and his voice grew louder and louder. Since the boys were now on opposite sleep schedules, a lot of times when Christian was trying to nap, brother and I would be playing right next door in the playroom. After the 5th time brother woke Christian up mid-nap with a loud scream, I decided the fluffy sound machine wouldn’t cut it anymore and we needed something louder that would stay on longer. Since this has come into our lives Christian sleeps peacefully and soundly no matter how loud brother tries to get.
What I love about it most is how loud it can get. The first time I turned up the volume all the way I had to immediately turn it down as it was hurting my ears due to how loud it was. This means all sounds are drowned out no matter what is happening outside of Christian’s room. It can also stay on all nap / night long, which to me is necessary as Christian got older. We no longer have to worry about being quiet because Christian is sleeping, in fact I’ve even built the playroom organizer – hammering and power drilling – while Christian was sleeping because I knew the noise I was making would not bother him. There are three different sound options to choose from – bright white noise, deep white noise and gentle surf and you can adjust the volume from whisper-quiet to mind-blowing loud.
GOOD: I love that I can use this in Christian’s room but also easily take it with us when we travel since it is so small and compact. What is even better is that it is USB rechargeable meaning you can take it with you on the go. The device will operate all night long on a single charge but I always keep it plugged in while in Christian’s room and if I ever need to take it with me anywhere I know that it will be fully charged and ready to go. The device is only 3.5” in diameter and 3.8 ounces meaning it easily fits in your diaper bag, purse, suitcase, carry on, etc. Anywhere you need to take this it is ready to go.
BAD: I don’t understand why they don’t include the plug adapter in the box. You are given the USB cord but in order to plug it into the wall you need to go find a plug adapter laying around your house. For the price of the device I can’t for the life of me understand why they wouldn’t provide this piece of the puzzle. Luckily, I have 10 billion iPhone charges laying around my house so I had a plug adapter to spare, but had I been on vacation when using this for the first time I would have been extremely annoyed.
Also, in order to turn on / off you have to hold down for 3 long seconds. This isn’t so much of an issue when turning off, but sometimes I feel as though I have held down the power button for 3 seconds but it doesn’t turn on. You really need to count a very slow 3 seconds to ensure it turns on.
UGLY: There are cheaper white noise machines on the market but for me the $32 price tag is worth it because of (1) how loud it gets and (2) the look of it. For me, the compact size and sleek design doesn’t draw attention to it in a room - instead it blends in with the décor around it. I’m able to get this as loud or quiet as I need for Christian to get the best sleep possible. His sleep definitely improved after starting to use this in his room and for me that is priceless.
* There is another version of this called the Hushh. Made by the same company, the Hushh is virtually identical, except it is marketed as a baby white noise machine, whereas the Rohm is not marketed towards children. The Hushh has a built-in night light, the ability to lock the volume and a clip rather than the lanyard that comes with the Rohm as the lanyard can be considered a choking hazard for children. For me, I didn’t need all the extras of the Hushh and when I was purchasing the Hushh was priced higher for those added benefits. Today, you can get the Hushh for a cheaper price, so I probably would just purchase the Hushh over the Rohm purely because of the price difference since they do basically the exact same thing.
